Autocross

Autocross is presented by the GVC BMW Club. **

Autocross is an ideal way for drivers at any level of ability to learn the fundamentals of car control. It’s an opportunity to drive your car more aggressively than is safe or practical on city streets or country roads. That’s not to say reckless driving is encouraged; on the contrary, good autocross drivers are in complete control while driving their cars close to their handling limits. One of the attractions to newcomers is that any car in sound mechanical condition can be used. SUVs and vans are not permitted but beyond that, almost any car can participate. Most people that attend an autocross for the first time have never attempted anything like it. Many come back because it’s just so much fun. A few keep doing it year after year because it has become a part of their lives.

AutocrossWe group cars into different classes to make things interesting. Cars are grouped by manufacturer depending on the numbers represented. We group BMW, MINI, and Porsche into separate classes. Other manufacturers are usually grouped into the ‘Other’ class but sometimes we’ll group Corvettes or Corvairs together when there is good turnout.

Guests are always welcome to watch and cheer on their friends. Things to bring to an event include the kinds of things you would bring to a picnic or day at the beach – appropriate clothing, drinks, sun block and maybe a chair. Food is usually available from a vendor or nearby restaurant, but packing a lunch or snack is a good idea.

We will be returning again to Cherry Valley Motorsport Park in Lafayette for two events this year. Once in Spring, and once again in the Fall. Cherry Valley has proven a fun kart course with challenging corners coupled with straightaway action, making for an exciting autocross. After the Fall event, don’t forget to grab some fresh apple fritters for the return trip and maybe stock up on some fine apple wine from the local vintners while there.

We are excited to announce that we will be running once again at Monroe Community College. MCC is a great location, halfway between Buffalo and Syracuse. With its excellent lots, we can be sure of an exciting course and a fun filled day.

June 24 – MCC with Finger Lakes SCCA for the Joel Ajavon Memorial event

Entry fees

Top Gun: $40 (Members Only)

Car Numbers

Numbers from MotorsportReg.com will be honored whenever possible.  Numbers can be applied with shoe polish or painters tape (usually available at the registration desk) if you don’t have vinyl or magnetic numbers.

Car Tech Review

A technical review will be performed on each car. We use a “roving tech” system, so cars will be checked in the paddock area. If your car is ready for tech leave the hood open so the tech team can check it. Items that are checked during tech include:

• All loose objects removed from car interior and trunk, including driver floor mat
• Rapid Throttle return
• Battery secure
• Firm Brake Pedal
• No play in Wheel bearings
• Adequate tire tread (no cord showing)
• Helmet within one generation of current Snell rating. Must have hologram with SA or M 2005 or newer. Loaner helmets are available to drivers that don’t have a Snell-certified helmet.

In addition…

• All participants must have a valid driver’s license.
• If under 18 with a valid drivers license, you must bring a minor waiver signed by both parents.
• All participants and spectators must sign the GVC waiver on site.

We look forward to seeing a lot of old and new friends at our events this year!
